Phillip A. Johnston

Phillip A. Johnston, 87, went home to be with his Lord at 10:30 pm on Monday, September 30, 2024 at Stonebridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Benton. 

Phil was born on July 30, 1937 in Mount Pleasant, MI, the son of Frank and Harriett Johnston. He married Beverly I. Greathouse on August 23, 1958 in Harrison, MI. 

He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Benton, IL. Throughout his life, he taught school in Santa Ana, CA, Villa Park, CA, and Louisville, IL. He also owned two businesses in Flora, IL and worked as an Estimator at Riverside Millwork in Mt. Vernon, WA, where he retired in 1998. Phil was a member of the Carpenter’s Union of Western Washington. He loved to play and watch sports and do woodworking. 

He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Benton; son, Michael Johnston and wife Rebecca of Benton; four grandchildren, Jennifer and husband Eric Weinbauer of Benton; Bethany and husband Josh Crisp of Bethalto; Adam and wife Bailey Johnston of Benton; and Trevor Johnston of Benton; seven great-grandchildren, Caleb and Carly Weinbauer, Tinley, Lexi, and Silas Crisp, Sterling and Kai Johnston; brother Edwin and wife Sandy Johnston of Grand Rapids, MI; and several nieces and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Barbara and husband Richard Tully of Schoolcraft, MI. 

A visitation will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at Immanuel Baptist Church in Benton with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Samaritan’s Purse.
