Gayla Jane (Bacon) Moss

Gayla Jane (Bacon) Moss, 71, of Waterford, MI passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by family and friends on May 16th, 2024 at Trinity Health Hospital in Pontiac, MI.

Gayla was born in Chicago Heights, IL on June 2, 1952, the daughter of William T. & June (Moye) Bacon. Gayla was a great softball player, an excellent bowler with leagues at the Benton Bowling Alley, an active member of the Parent Teacher Association during her kid’s grade school years, and a Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Macedonia, IL. She enjoyed playing cards, working in the garden, baking, camping, kayaking, traveling with family, playing with her dog, Cookie, and most of all being a loving mother, sister, aunt, grandparent (MaMa), and friend to many. Most of Gayla’s life was spent as a resident of Southern Illinois, until 7 years ago when she moved to Michigan. After moving, she became an active member of the River of Life Christian Church where she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior in 2018 and was baptized in 2023.

Gayla was preceded in death by her father, William Bacon, her mother, June Bacon, her brothers William Bacon, Jr. and David Bacon, 3 infant siblings, her niece, Tammy (Stevens) Overturf, and her lifelong friend, Sharon Piazza.

Gayla is survived by her son, Shad (Kristan) Moss of Manchester, MO, her daughter, Tonya (Raymond) Mullins of Waterford, MI, her brother Gerald Allen, of Hartford, IL, her sister Sherri (Jim) Kellett of Terre Haute, IN, her sister Linda (Rod) McAfoos of Rosedale, IN, her sister-in-law, Carla (Tom) Nolen of Herrin, IL, 13 nieces/nephews: Tracy (Jerry) Floyd of Brazil, IN, Eric (Michelle) Stevens of Statesville, NC, Carrie (Craig) Maschino of Terre Haute, IN, TJ McAfoos of Terre Haute, IN, Elyssa Moss of Metamora, IL, Elizabeth Moss of Prairietown, IL, Todd (Victoria) Stevens of West Frankfort, IL, Jennifer (John) Johnson of Brazil, IN, Amy (Donnie) Shelton of Herrin, IL, Missy Watts of Owensboro, KY, Donald (Jaime) Bacon of Las Vegas, NV, Matthew (Summer) Bacon of Bowling Green, KY, Steven Bacon of Golden, CO, 11 grandchildren: Shae (Austin) Ogroski of New Haven, MO, Brendan (Jessica) Moss of Mt. Vernon, IL, Michael Mullins of Waterford, MI, Zachary (Cara) Moss of Valley Park, MO, Dawson Moss of Manchester, MO, Paige Washington of Manchester, MO, Caleb Washington of Manchester, MO, Tanner Washington of Manchester, MO, Wesley Mullins of Waterford, MI, Aaron Mullins of Waterford, MI, Lilyan Moss of Manchester, MO, and 1 great-grandchild, Liam Ogroski of New Haven, MO.

Burial Services will be provided by Morton & Johnston Funeral Home and will be at 11:00 AM on June 29, 2024, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Thompsonville, IL with Pastor Tom Kirk officiating. After the burial service, a Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at Akin Grade School in Akin, IL at 12:00 PM. All family and friends are invited to attend.
