Dale Vernon Rose, 83, of Sesser, Illinois (long-time Benton resident) passed away at his home at 3:00 A.M. on December 1, 2023, surrounded by his family. He had been sick and, in the hospital, quite a bit this year. Three weeks ago, he decided he was ready to go home, both figuratively and literally. His family was fortunate enough to be able to grant his final wish to come home.
Dale was born on January 23, 1939 to Vernon and Mary Rose in Whittington, Illinois. He was a 1956 graduate of Benton High School. He graduated Spears College in Shelbyville, Illinois in 1958 with a degree in Business. Dale was the owner and operator of Rose’s Phillips 66 Service Station located on West Main Street in Benton.
He married Judy (McGuire) Rose on April 9, 1960 and together they had a son Jeff, and a daughter Pamela.
Dale was always a very hard worker, but also found time to be an avid golfer and bowler. Being a skilled mechanic, after retirement, Dale worked with his brother-in-law Elmer Brookins repairing lawn mowers. In his later years, he enjoyed working on his yard, mowing his and his daughter Pam’s lawn, watching sporting events and most of all spending time with his 3 Granddaughters. They were the absolute joy of his life and he was so proud of each of them!
Dale is survived by his wife of 63 years Judy Rose; His son Jeff (Tricia) Rose; daughter Pamela (Kevin deLatour); granddaughters Elizabeth (Zach) Harwell, Janie (Cole Rector) McMurray and Kimber McMurray. He is also survived by nephews Dale (Penny) Brookins and Ron (Susan) Brookins.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, sister Jane (Elmer) Brookins and grandson Grant Rose.
Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. on Friday, December 8th at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton. Service will follow the visitation officiated by Pastor Dr. Kurt Sanders. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children Research Hospital.
