Barry Alan Milton, 76, of Benton, Illinois passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
He was born on February 2, 1949 in Memphis, Tennessee, to Henry Milton and Minnie Volman Milton. Barry grew up with a deep love for nature, animals, photography, and the outdoors. He attended the State Technical Institute at Memphis and graduated with his Associates of Engineering. In 1976, he graduated from Memphis State University with his Bachelors of Science in Education. Barry worked as a park ranger in his early years after college in Arkansas where he found joy in preserving the outdoors and becoming a skilled marksman. He then moved to Montezuma, Iowa in 1982 to raise his family before coming back to him and his wife’s southern roots in 2002. Once in southern Illinois, he reinvented himself as an electrician, welder, and gunsmith.
A lifelong outdoorsman, Barry found peace in open spaces and on the water. He loved boating, hiking, wildlife, and the beauty he found along the way. He had an eye for detail and a deep appreciation for moments others might miss, often capturing them through his camera lens.
Barry also had a deep love for dogs, always surrounded by loyal companions who brought him comfort and joy. His home was never without a wagging tail or a well-worn leash by the door.
Barry married Julia Ann Collins on April 21, 1973 at Shaeffer Memorial Chapel in Germantown, Tennessee. They spent the majority of their married life living in Iowa and raising their family.
Barry is survived by his two children, Joseph (Angela) Milton of Germantown Hills, Illinois and Emily (Timothy) Milligan of Benton, Illinois.
He is survived by four grandchildren: Riley Tschannen of Benton, Illinois, Leoni Milton of Germantown Hills, Illinois, Hazel Milton of Germantown Hills, Illinois, and Mack Milligan of Benton, Illinois. And his dog, Sam.
Barry was preceded in death by his mother, Minnie, his father, Henry, his wife, Julie, and his brother, Stephen Milton.
Per Barry’s final wishes, he was cremated and his ashes will be spread at a private family Celebration of Life.
